The Meaning of Jewelry
What is your first memory of jewelry? What does it mean to you?
Jewelry can be fun and fashionable, but it can also be incredibly meaningful.
I've always known this, I mean its pretty common knowledge.
But when I got engaged to my partner, Mac, and we bought engagement rings together, well, I think that's when I really "got it".
One day he told me that when he feels sad or unsure of himself, he looks at his ring, kisses it, and he feels better. To know that such a small piece of metal could make his day brighter really touched me.
Mac is more than my romantic partner or fiance, he is the first person who has seen me in years and accepted me as I am, flaws and all, with open arms.
He never tries to change me or manipulate me- he accepts me as I am.
Romance has always been a challenge for me.
I was with a woman for about 7 years, and I'm just 30, so that really was the majority of my 20's. After that relationship ended, I really wasn't sure if I could find someone again. (It's hard dating with mental illness, its even harder dating when you're a member of the LGBTQ community; I mean just talking statistics - there are LESS of us!) You might look at me and think I appear confident, pretty, etc, but I really did struggle in that area. If you know me personally, you know how hard it has been.
And sure, okay, it can be easy to find people interested, but finding someone who loves you loudly and completely? Now that's hard. That's hard for anyone.
So this little ring means a lot to me.
It symbolizes finding a soul who matches mine, who supports me, who boasts about me, who's happiness is my happiness.
Whoops! This blog post turned into a little love letter to my fiance.. oh well- he deserves it, trust me. He deals with a lot!
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to spend a little moment with me here.
Now tell me, what does jewelry mean to you? Do you have an important piece that symbolizes something or someone you love? I would love to hear your story!
